Graduate Centre Life Sciences
Welcome
on the web sites of the Graduate Centre Life Sciences of the Research Academy Leipzig.
Life Sciences comprise a cluster of scientific research lines with a strong interdisciplinary focus on structures and behaviour of living organisms. The investigation of the biological foundations of mental processes at the University Leipzig has a long tradition leading from neuro-anatomical investigations over the quantification of mental processes to the establishment of experimental psychology.
Modern Cognitive Sciences have evolved as an intersection for the investigation of molecular and cellular foundations of the brain functions in neurosciences on the one hand, and, on the other, of the mental functions that are based on these foundations. This approach is adopted in orientation on behavioural research by focussing medical, social-science and sports-science investigations on the field of prevention and rehabilitation. Additionally, the evolutionary anthropology represents another interdisciplinary evolutionary theory approach that ranges from zoology to linguistics.
Accordingly broad is the background of the participants of the Graduate Centre Life Sciences: It ranges from the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology, the Faculty of Physics and Earth Science, to the IPP with the Faculty of Social Science and Sport Sciences as well as the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, the MPI for Evolutionary Anthropology and the MPI for Mathematics in the Natural Sciences.
The Graduate Centre Life Sciences of the Research Academy Leipzig comprises four Research Training Groups, one International Postgraduate Programme, two "International Max Planck Research Schools" and the MD/PhD Programme of the Faculties of Medicine and Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology.
