Graduate Centre Mathematics/Computer Science and Natural Sciences
Welcome on the website of the Graduate Centre Mathematics/Computer Science and Natural Sciences of the Research Academy Leipzig
Currently, the Graduate Centre Mathematics/Computer Science and Natural Sciences is constituted of five Postgraduate Programmes (so-called classes) established at the Faculty for Mathematics and Computer Science, the Faculty of Physics and Earth Science, the Faculty for Chemistry and Mineralogy as well as at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences (MPI MIS).
The Postgraduate Programmes sustain co-operations with several research institutes in Leipzig and integrate PhD students from these institutions into the Graduate Centre. These institutes are, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig-Halle (UFZ), the Leibniz Institutes of Surface Modification (IOM), for Tropospheric Research (IfT) and the Institute for Non-classical Chemistry (INC).
Interdisciplinary research on mathematics, theoretical physics and large parts of computer science focuses on the investigation of structural problems that arise from physical and biological issues. Interdisciplinary research in physics and chemistry cover nano and micro dimensional semiconductors, molecules in liquids and in interaction with interfaces, polymeric nanostructures and molecular pre-cursors, as well as the exploration and utilization of mass transfer regularities in porous materials. Another focus of the Graduate Centre lies on the exploration of self-organization mechanisms in organic and anorganic structures, in biomimetic systems and in living matter.
Currently, 240 PhD students participate in the Graduate Centre, the share of foreign students amounts to 26 %. Approximately 100 university teachers and lecturers are involved in the guidance and education of the PhD students. The technical courses of the PhD candidates are held in individual classes. In addition, an organized general programme promotes further qualification (e.g. key qualifications, language courses) in comprehensive classes, in this way supporting interdisciplinary exchange.
For information on vacancies and the application procedure please consult the respective class websites.
